Sky Bet Review and Ratings

#2 of 15 Sports Betting

Leeds-based Sky Bet was formed in 2001 and has quickly grown to become of the leading online bookmakers in the UK. The company became renowned for its strong track record in innovation and was one of the first bookmakers to fully realise the potential of online and mobile platforms for betting and playing games. CVC private equity firm invested in Sky Bet in March 2015 to further enhance the product so it has the opportunity for investment and rapid growth while retaining the branding and support from Sky.

SkyBet has five major online products - Sky Bet, Sky Vegas, Sky Casino, Sky Poker and Sky Bingo. Here we are looking at the sports betting side of the company but our other Sky Bet reviews will delve into the gaming side. Being part of the Sky brand, you would expect this bookmaker to have a comprehensive and exciting coverage of sports - and you won't be disappointed. Sky Bet believes ‘it matters more when there's money in it’, so we wanted to see if they deserve to be a top-rated bookmaker. Its top sports are the gamblers' favourites - football and horse-racing - but Sky Bet has dozens of sports covered from around the world.

Being part of a global brand, you can feel confident when gambling with Sky Bet. It is licensed and regulated by the Gambling Commission for UK customers and by the Alderney Gambling Control Commission for all other customers.

Website & Usability

01 Website & Usability

Good looking and appealing website

Sky Bet has eye-catching images on the home page to draw you in. It's immediately apparent where its priorities lie as the top promotions are for horse racing and football. The index also has these as its top sports followed by the next horse races and quick links to the Premier League, Sky Bet Championship and Champions League. The A-Z Sports shows how seriously Sky Bet takes sports with many games being covered including Aussie Rules, curling, netball, Gaelic games and volleyball. You can also have a wager on TV and film specials, politics or festival specials including whether it will snow on Christmas Day.

Although Sky Bet has a lot to offer in terms of sports, promotions and extras, the website does not look cluttered. It is clearly laid out with good use of images. We like that the main image is a slideshow so there are about four images and offers within the one frame. Here you can click on each one to join up to Sky Bet, follow a live match, see the top price promise as verified by Oddschecker and look at a featured bet of an upcoming game.

Easy to navigate

The Sky Bet login and sign-up buttons are clearly visible on the home page along with My Bets so you can check the position of your bets in one click, look at the stats including real-time match statistics and cash out, if you wish. When looking for the best online sports betting site, it needs to be easy to navigate with easy-to-find information, which Sky Bet has. This attention to detail has also been followed through in the SkyBet mobile version which we discuss more below.

Great range and depth of coverage

During our Sky Bet reviews we were certainly impressed with Sky Bet's sports coverage, which covers some minor sports as well as some of the lower football leagues worldwide. Sky Bet's top feature is its football coverage so you can have a wager on just about any league you fancy right down to the Isthmian League, Germany Regionalliga and women's international friendlies. Former Liverpool and England star Jamie Redknapp is also dishing out free Sky Bet betting tips on football including correct score and first goal scorer to help you. That has to be worth signing up for on its own! There are also about 30 more sports available on SkyBet including winter sports, virtual sports, rugby league and boxing.

This sportsbook also offers enhanced football accumulators with special trebles, fourfolds and fivefolds with some attractive odds as well as Under/Over 2.5 goals or both teams to score. For many football games, there are more than 100 markets such as correct score, winning margin such as Liverpool to win by exactly one goal, double chance like Manchester United to win or draw, goals in both halves or goal handicaps. More unusually, Sky Bet has a RequestABet Specials sections so you can basically bet on anything you like, such as a goal in each half and four or more corners in each half.

Sadly no live streaming of football

Sky Bet has inplay, cash out, tips from top sports people like Jamie Redknapp and Sir Ian Botham but the one thing it lacks is live streaming. If you bet at least £1 per race you can watch the horse races, but the lack of live streaming for football and other sports is disappointing (but understandable) given the Sky Sports connection. If you are a Sky Sports subscriber, this is not a problem as you can follow the games or results service on TV but we think there must be a better solution. If streaming is a key component of your betting, particularly in-play, then Bet365 might be a better option. This lack of streaming for top sports means our Sky Bet rating is lower than it could have been.

03 Bonus

Sky Bet bonus - no deposit required

The Sky Bet bonus offers new customers a £10 free bet and you don’t even need to make a deposit to qualify! To get your free bet you just need to sign up as there's no Sky Bet promo code to remember.

You have to open an account through the website or on the Sky Bet app to qualify and you have 30 days to then use your offer. The free bet is non-withdrawable and your stake is not included in any returns. The bet must be used on a single or each-way market. Watch out If you are using Moneybookers or Neteller as they are not eligible for this offer.

It may not be one of the best sports betting bonuses in terms of monetary value but we like the fact that the Sky Bet sign up bonus doesn't ask new customers to make a qualifying bet before giving you the free SkyBet bet.

Free Bets for Existing Sky Bet users

Existing customers can also enjoy special offers by joining the Sky Bet Club to earn a £5 free bet every week when you stake £25. The qualifying bets have to be placed by midnight on Sunday and have odds of evens (2.00) or more. Cashed out bets are excluded. Your free bet will be credited to your account on Monday and can be used on any sport.

According to its website, in one month Sky Bet has given away more than £3.5 million in free bets, more than £3.5 million in winnings from its price boost bets and more than £3.9 million in extra winnings because of its best odds guaranteed promise.

Odds & Limits

04 Odds & Limits

Consistently good odds

With its price boosts, best odds guaranteed and enhanced bets, SkyBet certainly has some interesting bets. Also, if you look at the live table, you can clearly see the odds change so you know how the market is moving. Whilst it might not always have the best odds available, SkyBet reviews seem to agree that they offer consistently good odds - so you should be in safe hands!

SkyBet does set maximum amounts that can be won by a customer in one day's betting so if you are placing large bets, you can use the Sky Bet betting calculator to see if you would go over the limit. For the big football leagues and competitions like internationals and the English Premier League the maximum payout is £500,000. In horse racing the limit is also £500,000 for UK meetings when an industry SP is declared or £250,000 for bank holiday racing and Irish racing. In horse racing specials such as the Grand National and Cheltenham Festival the limit is £50,000. These SkyBet betting limits are not going to affect the average gambler, but professionals might want to look somewhere else - such as at William Hill - to get higher limits.

Sky Bet is great for promotions with its top price promise on every favourite at one horse race meeting every day, top odds guaranteed on UK and Irish meetings, plus price boosts on certain matches with better odds.

Odds: good but not industry leading
Limits: up to £500,000

Customer Service

05 Customer Service

What you would expect from a global brand

SkyBet customer service is comprehensive. Click on the Help button at the top and you will be taken to a new page where your query can be answered. The FAQ section is extensive. There are articles dealing with accounts, verification documents, login problems, bets and banking queries. There is also information about different betting offers and whether a bet can be cancelled or amended. If this doesn't answer your question fully, you can contact the company by using the SkyBet live chat for an instant response, phoning between 8am and midnight every day, or emailing the company via the form on their site.

We would suggest trying Chat first and then phoning. The staff are quick to respond and know their subject.

As you would expect from such a top, global brand, Sky Bet customer service is quick and professional.

06 Payments

Range of cards and PayPal accepted

In terms of SkyBet deposit and withdrawal you can use Visa, MasterCard, Maestro, Solo, Laser and PayPal to manage funds at Sky Bet. The bookie no longer accepts Skrill or Neteller however, so if that is your preference you need to look elsewhere. It is easy to transfer funds, just go to your account and follow the instructions. There are no charges although your bank may apply a surcharge if it sees the deposit as a cash transaction. You will need to contact your bank for advice on this. As soon as the bank authorises the transaction, the money is available in your account immediately.

The minimum deposit is £5 and withdrawal is £10. No fees apply and the money will be in your account within two to five working days. For PayPal, withdrawals are available within 24 hours. There is no limit to the amount you can withdraw and you can also set a deposit limit to control the maximum amount you wish to spend.

It seems as though Sky Bet is rather limited in its payment methods, but with the ease of setting up a PayPal account that shouldn’t stop you. If it really is an issue, some bookmakers, like William Hill and Bet365, will take a much wider range of e-wallets as well as bank transfers or even old-fashioned cheques.

Security and Licensing

07 Security and Licensing

Licensing and security you can trust

Sky Bet is licensed by the Gambling Commission in the UK and the Alderney Gambling Control Commission for customers outside the UK. This means you can use Sky Bet with confidence because it adheres to the strict guidelines imposed by the Gambling Commission to ensure operators meet high standards and that gambling is fair and open while protecting children and vulnerable people.

Security is tight and Sky Bet verifies every account that is opened to make sure the customer is 18 years old or over. The information you give to the bookie is safe as there are several measures in place including encrypting the website using Verisign SSL technology and showing the date and time of your last login whenever you enter the site to see if someone else has managed to access your account.

Customers are also advised never to share their PIN with anyone, choose a difficult PIN number and always remember to log out of the site when you have finished. If you have been inactive on the site for 90 minutes, Sky Bet will automatically log you out. With all these measures in place, our SkyBet rating shows top marks.

Mobile Application

08 Mobile Application

Fast and easy to use

The clean design of the website has transferred well on the SkyBet app and mobile site which look and feel very similar to the online version. You can check your bets, deposit and withdraw funds, place bets and cash out if you wish on your iPhone. Google Play restrictions mean the Android version is not in the Play Store but it can be downloaded through the website. The Sky Bet mobile version includes Sky Bet trackers, which is the new home of cash out, where you can see live football statistics and the status of your bet in one place.

For our Sky Bet reviews of the app and mobile site, we tested the speed and ease of logging in and placing bets, which certainly wasn't a problem. Using the app, you can manage your account, your finances, see your Sky Bet betting history and place bets. The in-play betting, cash out and streaming, where available, are brilliant on the Sky Bet betting app. However, it really comes into its own if you have a Sky Sports TV subscription to watch live games or use another streaming site.
